Closed Steel Fire Doors – Core Fire Barriers for Buildings; Keep Them Fully Closed for Safety

Within the building fire protection system, closed steel fire doors serve as the most fundamental and critical passive fire separation facilities. They are widely installed at core locations including stairwells, anterooms, equipment rooms, pipe shafts and fire compartment passages of high-rise buildings. In accordance with Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings and GB 12955-2024 Fire Doors, closed steel fire doors require no fire linkage control and rely on self-contained hardware to remain closed at all times. Featuring fire resistance, heat insulation and smoke blocking capabilities, they block vertical and horizontal spread of fire and toxic fumes, forming the primary rigid barrier protecting building evacuation routes. Numerous fire incident cases prove that most hazards such as rapid smoke propagation, blocked escape routes and casualties stem from improperly closed, deliberately propped-open or malfunctioning closed fire doors.

The core fire protection performance of closed steel fire doors lies in three key indicators: fire integrity, thermal insulation and air tightness. Qualified high-performance steel fire doors are integrally formed with thickened galvanized steel sheets. Door frame cavities are fully filled with fire-resistant mortar, door leaves are filled with high-density flame-retardant perlite thermal insulation cores, and special intumescent fire sealing strips are fitted around the perimeter. Under fire conditions, the doors maintain stable fire resistance ratings of 1.0 h and 1.5 h to effectively block open flames and high-temperature radiation. When exposed to high heat, the surrounding intumescent strips expand rapidly to seal all gaps, completely preventing penetration of toxic smoke and eliminating the chimney effect in stairwells, thus keeping vertical evacuation passages safe and accessible.

Steel closed fire doors boast outstanding structural strength, deformation resistance, moisture and corrosion resistance, as well as high-temperature tolerance. They are applicable to all types of premises including residential buildings, commercial complexes, industrial plants and underground spaces. Resistant to deformation, damage and damp cracking after long-term frequent opening and closing, they deliver extended service life and count as core compliant products for fire acceptance inspections. Adopting a fully mechanical closing mechanism without electrical control or linkage systems, they offer exceptional stability and reliability, free from risks such as electrical failure or power cut malfunctions, acting as an all-time operational fire safety barrier.

Closed steel fire doors are the lowest-cost yet most vital and least fault-tolerant safety barriers in building fire protection systems. No matter how premium the steel fire door is, all its fire resistance, smoke isolation and thermal insulation functions will be completely lost if it cannot stay fully closed. The crux of building fire safety lies not in sophisticated high-end fire equipment, but in keeping every closed fire door shut normally. Regular inspection and maintenance, elimination of unauthorized door propping, and timely replacement of faulty accessories are essential measures. Securing every fire door means safeguarding the bottom line of life safety for the whole building.
