Large-Span Wind-Resistant Rolling Shutter Door
Ordinary industrial rolling shutters are only suitable for small openings and low wind pressure conditions. Where the opening width is relatively large (openings wider than 6 m are generally classified as large-span), strong outdoor wind generates alternating positive and negative wind pressure on the door surface. This can easily cause slat bending, derailment, tearing and even overall collapse of the door. A large-span wind-resistant rolling shutter is not simply made by thickening rolling materials; instead, it forms a complete steel structural load-bearing system. Wind stiffeners are used to divide the calculated span, transferring wind pressure over the large area step by step to the main building structure. While retaining the roll-up feature of rolling shutters, it achieves wind pressure resistance for large openings. It is widely used for outdoor large openings in large factories, logistics warehouses, port yards and other similar sites.
Core Structural Composition and Working Principle of Large-Span Wind-Resistant Rolling Shutters
Ⅰ.Wind-resistant Slat (Main Load-Bearing Member)
As the primary wind-bearing component, it adopts an integrated cold-formed structure with wave profiles or reinforcing ribs, different from ordinary flat slats. Wind pressure is rapidly transferred from the panel to the side guides. Thickened plates and integral reinforcing ribs improve structural rigidity and reduce bending deformation under wind load. Q235 galvanized steel plate is commonly used; thicker profiles are applied for zones with high wind pressure. Slats are connected via interlocking hinges, balancing rolling flexibility while effectively preventing slat dislocation and disengagement.
Ⅱ.Wind Stiffener (Exclusive Core Component for Large Spans)
Designed to address the low cost-efficiency of merely thickening slats for wide openings with large span lengths. Vertically mounted on the inner side of slats. Functioning like multiple vertical simply supported beams, it splits and disperses wind loads on large-span slats, shortens the calculated force span, and transmits wind pressure to the roller shaft and bottom beam. Its spacing is calculated based on wind pressure and opening width. The top adopts a movable hinged design to ensure smooth rolling without jamming.
Ⅲ.Thickened Wind-Resistant Guide Rail (Restraint and Limiting Member)
Fabricated from thick cold-formed steel into deep C-channel profiles. Anti-drop retaining edges are equipped for high-wind scenarios to avoid slat pull-out, a common defect of shallow, thin ordinary guides. It restricts lateral displacement of slats and bears horizontal wind loads transferred by slats and wind stiffeners. It supports slats under positive wind pressure and locks slat ends against pull-out under negative suction wind. Guide rails are securely anchored by embedded steel plates and chemical anchor bolts; anchor points shall satisfy wind pressure calculation to guarantee stable overall force bearing.
Ⅳ.Bottom Beam (Bottom Sealing and Force-Bearing Member)
Made of thick hollow section steel, connected to the bottom slat of the door. It seals the gap at the bottom of the opening, bears concentrated wind loads on the bottom slats, keeps the door bottom flat and prevents slat outward overturning. Optional accessories include anti-collision rubber strips and obstruction sensing reversal devices for enhanced operational safety.
Ⅴ.Roller Shaft and Drive System
Specially sized for the dead load and high wind torque of large-span doors. The roller shaft uses thick-walled seamless steel pipe with reinforced end bearing housings. Matched with heavy-duty industrial rolling shutter motors and torque limiters. The roller shaft bears door dead weight and alternating lifting loads. The torque limiter protects slats, wind stiffeners and other structures from tensile damage under jamming caused by strong winds.
